Islam Karimov Kurash Tournament
6th
February 2005
Sittingbourne,
Great Britain
Sittingbourne,
Kent, the town which staged the first ever Kurash tournament in Great Britain in
1999, was the venue for this year’s Islam Karimov Tournament. Kurash in Great
Britain has developed considerably since those pioneering days and the 2005
competition proved to be the best held on British soil to date attracting well
in excess of 100 competitors including 15 from Uzbekistan, the home of Kurash,
three from Moldova and one from Slovakia.
Sittingbourne
has long been recognised as a breeding ground for judo, wrestling and martial
arts, with the Clarke family very much at the forefront. Martin Clarke has been
the town’s combat sports fraternity’s figurehead for many years now carrying
on a fine tradition first established in the 1950s by his parents Nobby and
Margret. Martin himself was an international class competitor in judo, sambo and
jiu-jitsu during the 1970s and 80s and as a veteran won a World Masters Judo
title in 2001. It was entirely fitting therefore that the Islam Karimov
Tournament was held in Sittingbourne, the town where the fledgling British
Kurash Association held its first ever event at Martin’s club back in 1999.
Guests
of honour included the International Kurash Association delegation led by IKA
President and Uzbekistan’s Minister of Sport, Mr Komil Yusupov, the Uzbek
Ambassador to Great Britain and BKA Honorary President His Excellency Mr
Tohtapulat Riskiev and his staff from the Embassy in London.
Following
an opening ceremony which consisted of some traditional Uzbek entertainment and
a demonstration of Kurash, the tournament itself got underway with the junior
boys and girls preliminaries. These bouts produced some spectacular throws from
the youngsters some of whom were only 8 years old.
The
Masters and Youth events livened up the proceedings even further with the Uzbeks
in particular looking outstanding in the Youth groups. Great Britain’s 2004
World Junior Bronze medallist, Jack Webb, met Uzbekistan’s former World Junior
champion Olim Ravshanov in an Under 66 kilo semi-final which featured several
swings of fortune before Ravshanov scored a chala in the last 30 seconds to even
up the bout and take victory by virtue of having achieved the last score.
Ravshanov beat fellow countryman Jiyanov in the final to claim gold. The Uzbeks
really stamped their authority in this age group producing all the finalists.
The
Senior Ladies Open produced another Uzbek gold as Dilshoda Hazratova narrowly
defeated Great Britain’s former world bronze medallist Joyce Malley by dakki
penalty.
However,
the tide turned a little in the Masters as Great Britain’s Rob Holden and Dave
Hatch pushed Uzbekistan’s Oktam Nabiev back into third in the Over 45 years
category.
The
British comeback continued in the Senior Men’s categories where Jack Webb
proved outstanding defeating former European bronze medallist Paul Sawyer in the
semi-final and avenged his earlier defeat in the Youth category to
Uzbekistan’s Olim Ravshanov by beating him by khalol in the final.
Under
73 kilos saw defending champion Umid Bozorov of Uzbekistan fail to hang on to
his title losing to fellow countryman Temur Eshkurbanov by khalol.
Another
defending champion, Marc Donnelly came unstuck against the spectacular throwing
skills of Uzbekistan’s Zarif Bozorov but recovered to take bronze in a highly
competitive class. Bozorov was a very impressive winner of this group.
The
very popular Sittingbourne wrestler John Clarke, son of Martin, set the crowd
alight with a devastating display at Under 90 kilos seeing off the Uzbek
challenge in the first round and finishing by despatching Moldova’s Tudor
Codreanu with a well-timed shoulder throw in, what had been up until then, an
evenly balanced final.
Uzbekistan
took another gold amongst the big men although Shokir Turaev was pushed hard by
veteran James Waithe in the final of the Under 100 kilos.
A great day’s Kurash
enjoyed by all and a host of medals for the local fighters ensured the
spectators went home happy. The day was completed by a colourful medal ceremony
where the winners were awarded with beautiful traditional Uzbek jackets, caps
and belts along with their medals.
The
British Kurash Association would like to thank Mr Yusupov and the IKA delegation
for their participation and support for the event, Mr Riskiev and the Uzbek
Embassy for their assistance and attendance, tournament organisers Tim Thomas,
Keith Costa, Paul Sawyer and Stephen Sweetlove MBE, and of course the referees
and table officials, in particular referee Andy Tremlett, who worked very hard
to keep the tournament running smoothly.
